Summer
When Summer was just 18 months old, a simple slip changed everything. She broke her leg, and what was first thought to be a straightforward injury became something much bigger. An X-ray revealed Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a condition meaning the bone in her leg would never fully heal on its own.
Since then, Summer has faced more than most toddlers ever should. She’s already had two surgeries: the first to insert a rod to support her leg, and the second involving an infusion to encourage bone growth, followed by a new rod. Through it all, Summer’s strength has shone brightly - but her family wanted something special that reflected that courage in a way she could see, hold and grow up with.
That’s when Sandie, Summer’s aunt, reached out to Claireabella. She had a beautiful idea: a bespoke character created just for Summer — one that didn’t hide her journey, but proudly included it. Together, Sandie and the Claireabella team worked closely to design a character featuring a clamshell on her leg - a gentle, magical symbol of protection, strength and uniqueness. Not something to “fix”, but something to celebrate.
The final character wasn’t just an illustration — it was a story Summer could grow into. A reminder that her differences are part of her power, and that she is never defined by what she’s been through, only by who she is.For us at Claireabella, this is why we do what we do.
